Short for electronic commerce
Business transaction that occursover the Internet


+What is e-mail?

Short for electronic mail
The transmission of messages and files via a computer network
Messages can consist of simple text or can contain attachments, such as documents, graphics, or audio/video clips
Internet access providers usually provide an e-mail program
Some Web sites—such as Google Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail—provide free e-mail services

+What is an e-mail address ?
Email address is unique name that consists of a user name and domain name that identifies the user.


+How does an e-mail message travel?

Step 1.Using e-mail software, you create and send message

Step 2.Your software contacts software on your service provider’s outgoing mail server

Step 3.Software on outgoing mail server determines best route for data and sends message, which travels along Internet routers to recipient’s incoming mail server

Step 4.When recipient uses e-mail software to check for e-mail messages, the message transfers from incoming mail server to recipient’s computer

A mailing list is a group of e-mail names and addresses given a single name

+What is instant messaging (IM)?
IM is a real-time Internet communications service that notifies you when one or more people are online and allows you to exchange messages or files.

Guidelines for evaluating the value of a web site:
+Affiliation: a reputable institution should support the Web site without bias in the information.
+Audience: is the website should be written at an appropriate level.
+ Authority: is the Web site should list the author and the appropriate credentials.
+Content: is the Web site should be well organized and the links should work
+Currency: the information on the web page should be current.
+Design: the pages at the web site should download quickly and be visually pleasing and easy to navigate.
+Objectivity: the Web site should contain little advertising and be free of preconception

Some people use the phrase, suffering the Web, to refer to the activity of using links to explore the Web
Downloading
is the process of a computer receiving information,depending upon connection speed, downloading can take from a few seconds to several minutes

URL> a web server delivers the web page to your computer

A search engine is a program that finds Web sites, Web pages , images, videos, news , and other information related to specific topic. A subject directory classifies Web pages in an organized set of categories, such as sports or shopping , and related subcategories.

Hyperlink(or link): Built in connection or other related Web page location. Link is an item found elsewhere or same Web page, different Web page at the same web site, web page at the different website

How can you recognize links?
+Pointer changes to a small hand when you point to a link,
+A link can be text or an image
+Text link are usually underlined and in a different color

*Many search engines use a program called a " spider" to build and maintain list of worlds found on web site.

+Portal is a web that offers a variety of the Internet services from a single convenient location.
