+What is e-mail?

Short for electronic mail

Messages can consist of simple text or can contain attachments, such as documents, graphics, or audio/video clips

+What is an e-mail address ?
Email address is unique name that consists of a user name and domain name that identifies the user.


+How does an e-mail message travel?

Step 1.Using e-mail software, you create and send message

Step 2.Your software contacts software on your service provider’s outgoing mail server

Step 3.Software on outgoing mail server determines best route for data and sends message, which travels along Internet routers to recipient’s incoming mail server

Step 4.When recipient uses e-mail software to check for e-mail messages, the message transfers from incoming mail server to recipient’s computer

A mailing list is a group of e-mail names and addresses given a single name

+What is instant messaging (IM)?
IM is a real-time Internet communications service that notifies you when one or more people are online and allows you to exchange messages or files.

Guidelines for evaluating the value of a web site:
+Affiliation: a reputable institution should support the Web site without bias in the information.
+Audience: is the website should be written at an appropriate level.
+ Authority: is the Web site should list the author and the appropriate credentials.
+Content: is the Web site should be well organized and the links should work
+Currency: the information on the web page should be current.
+Design: the pages at the web site should download quickly and be visually pleasing and easy to navigate.
+Objectivity: the Web site should contain little advertising and be free of preconception
